T

he House of Representatives has given the nod for Gen. Tito Karnavian to be discharged from his position as the National Police chief after President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo sent a letter regarding the matter to the legislative body.

The letter, dated Monday, requested the House’s approval for Tito’s resignation and it was discussed by leaders of political party factions at the House on Tuesday, House Speaker Puan Maharani said.

“[Tito] will be assigned another position in the government,” the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician told reporters.

Members of the House attending a plenary meeting on Tuesday also unanimously voiced their approval for the President’s request.

Puan said that Tito himself had delivered his letter of resignation both as the nation’s top police officer and from the police force itself, adding that the President had named deputy National Police chief Comr. Gen. Ari Dono Sukmanto to replace Tito temporarily as the acting police chief.

It had been rumored that Tito will get a position in Jokowi’s second-term Cabinet, particularly after he made an appearance alongside numerous high-profile figures ─ including professionals ─ who held talks with Jokowi on ministerial positions in the Cabinet at the State Palace on Monday.

The President is expected to announce the final line-up of his second-term Cabinet on Wednesday. (gis)
