The HTI was disbanded for spreading ideologies that were contrary to Pancasila and the Constitution following the issuance of Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perppu) No. 2/2017 on mass organizations.
The youth wing of the country’s largest Muslim mass organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) has urged the police in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) to take stern action against active members of the outlawed Muslim group Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia.
GP Ansor, the NU youth wing, stated the police should arrest Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) members who continue to call for the establishment of a caliphate in the country.
"GP Ansor in East Nusa Tenggara urges the local police to arrest HTI activists who are still promoting the idea of establishing a caliphate in NTT. Our country is based on law, so no one should escape justice. Hence, HTI activists who continue to advocate for a caliphate [here] must be arrested soon," chairman of GP Ansor’s NTT chapter, Adjhar Jowe, told reporters on Tuesday.
He said his organization had kept a record of HTI's activities in the province, including four discussions and mass prayers held in the province's capital city of Kupang in 2019.
Adjhar said he believed the activities were part of an effort by the banned group to publicly demonstrate its resistance to the government. He added that the activities showed that even though the group had been formally disbanded, caliphate teachings were not yet banned.
