Brazilian-born Beltrame, who has been playing in the Indonesian soccer league since 2005, met with House Commission III overseeing legal affairs, human rights and security on Wednesday. The meeting resulted in a recommendation from Commission III for Beltrame to proceed with his naturalization process.
Beltrame has played for several top clubs in the country, including Persela Lamongan, Persija Jakarta and Arema FC. For the 2019 season, he signed in with Persib Bandung in March but remains unavailable to play at the moment because of the ongoing naturalization process.
However, during Thursday’s meeting, several members of Commission X voiced their concerns regarding Beltrame’s age, which is 37.
“He’s already a 37-year-old. What kind of contribution he will make?” asked commission member Ferdiansyah, a Golkar Party politician.
Irine Yusiana Roba of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) expressed her concern, describing the naturalization as a “desperate” approach by the country in building up its national teams.
