One reportedly dead, another injured after youth brawl breaks out in Sorong

The incident began after groups of teenagers playing with carbide cannons started a brawl, according to the police.

ne local resident reportedly died and another was injured after a brawl broke out between two groups of teenagers on Tuesday afternoon in Klademak subdistrict in Sorong, West Papua. 

Nine houses in the area were damaged as result of the incident, according to the police. 

“It all started when two groups of teenagers started playing with carbide cannons, which led to a brawl as they attacked each other and damaged houses,” Sorong Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Mariochristy PS Siregar said. 

Some of the nine houses were heavily damaged after stones were thrown at them and some houses were burned.

According to information gathered by Antara news agency, a local resident died after reportedly getting beaten and another sustained serious injuries after being hacked. 

Authorities are still investigating the incident. 

Mariochristy said that personnel of the police and the Indonesian Military (TNI) had been deployed to handle the situation and ensure the conflict would not escalate any further. 

The police apprehended a perpetrator who was allegedly behind the conflict, Mariochristy said. He called on Sorong residents to not be provoked by the incident and refrain from engaging in anarchic acts. 

Sorong District Command commander Lt. Col. Budiman said the situation had returned normal in the area.

“We will communicate with local administration officials and sit together to solve the problem,” he said. (afr)
