Indonesia surpassed its target of 60 gold medals with a total of 267 medals, comprising 72 gold, 84 silver and 111 bronze, finishing fourth overall.
outh and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali has praised Indonesia’s athletes for exceeding expectations at the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines, highlighting in particular athletes who overcame adversity and those who put on performances that saw medal droughts end.
He said the nation’s victories needed to be rewarded but admitted there was no clear template on determining cash rewards given the unexpected medal haul. Indonesia surpassed its target of 60 gold medals with a total of 267 medals, comprising 72 gold, 84 silver and 111 bronze, finishing fourth overall.
Zainudin said discussions on the issue were ongoing.
“We are still discussing this with the Finance Ministry and all sport stakeholders. We are going to publish [the results] soon,” the minister told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.
Host country the Philippines finished atop the standings, securing 387 medals, comprising 149 gold, 117 silver and 121 bronze medals. Vietnam finished second with 288 medals, comprising 98 gold, 85 silver and 105 bronze.
Third place belonged to Thailand, which finished with 318 medals, comprising 92 gold, 103 silver and 123 bronze.
Indonesia saw several of its athletes defy the odds. Its men’s water polo team won its first SEA Games gold in the sport by ending Singapore’s decades-long run of dominance in water polo — it had not lost in a final since 1977. In wushu, Edgar Xavier Marvelo won golds in gunshu and men’s duilian despite the passing of his father mid tournament.
