he Jakarta administration is moving to expand LRT Jakarta’s east-west corridor despite the possibility it would "overlap" an MRT Jakarta route.
The Jakarta administration and the City Council have agreed to allocate a total of Rp85.6 billion (US$6.1 million) in the 2020 city budget for the east-west corridor of LRT Jakarta to construct a fully elevated 19.7-kilometer line between Pulogadung in East Jakarta and Kebayoran Lama in South Jakarta.
The corridor is to serve areas including Perintis Kemerdekaan in East Jakarta, Suprapto, Senen, Tugu Tani, Kebon Sirih, Sarinah and Tanah Abang in Central Jakarta and KS Tubun in West Jakarta.
The Rp 15 trillion line is expected to commence operation by 2022.
Despite the budget having been allocated, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan admitted the administration had not requested approval for the track plan from the Transportation Ministry, saying it would propose it next year.
“Only a few days are left in this year. Hence, [a request for approval] must be submitted next year, hopefully [early],” he said on Sunday, tempo.co reported.
Anies said the expansion of the LRT was intended to accelerate the development of railway-based transportation in Jakarta. However, he refused to elaborate on the plan.
