resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s administration plans to coordinate Papuan development programs under one body – following the path of his predecessor Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister, Mahfud MD, says that a lack of coordination has been one of the major problems in developing Papua and West Papua.
He says that development has not been distributed fairly in the two easternmost provinces because the ministries applied different agendas and different approaches.
Therefore, the government plans to combine the two provinces’ development through one desk.
“We expect that the development of Papua will be integrated and synergized into one Papuan desk under a new legal umbrella, which will replace the Presidential Regulation No. 9/2017, which will expire by the end of the year,” the minister said during the 2019 Papua Development Summit in Jakarta on Tuesday.
“Although ministries manage their respective budgets [for programs in Papua], the budget management will be coordinated by the Papua desk.”
Currently, there are already two Papua desks under the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) and the Office of the Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister. Mahfud suggested that the government would possibly merge the two desks into one.
