he year 2019 has been marked by important milestones in the modernization of the country’s railway transportation system with the inauguration of the first ever rail-based mass rapid transportation system and the development of the first high-speed train.
On March 23, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo inaugurated Jakarta’s MRT system, marking a new era in Indonesia’s railway transportation system.
After almost a year since it began commercially operating, the Jakarta MRT has become an importation means of transportation for Jakarta residents.
Aside from the MRT, this year Indonesia also saw major strides in large long-distance railway projects. The high-speed railway project connecting Jakarta and Bandung in West Java, for example, has made significant progress.
PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC) – the Indonesia-China consortium responsible for the project – kicked off construction of 13 tunnels including Halim Tunnel in East Jakarta and Walini Tunnel in West Bandung. By May, the 608-meter Walini Tunnel was complete.
On Oct. 2, the high-speed railway project recorded another milestone with the installation of the first box girder on an elevated section in West Cikarang. Of the 142.3 kilometers of track making up the high-speed railway, about 80 km will be elevated and 16.9 km will pass through tunnels.
“As we know that elevated structures make up the majority of our railway project, this girder installation will accelerate the development of the railway track, which is expected to be connected in 2020,” KCIC president director Chandra Dwiputra said in a press briefing on Sept. 10 in Jakarta.
