Luthfi, whose photo clutching an Indonesian flag to his face has become an emblem of September’s student protests, was among the 1,489 people arrested during the demonstrations and among the 380 of whom being prosecuted.
ede Luthfi Alfiandi, 20, whose photo clutching an Indonesian flag to his face has become an emblem of September’s student protests over controversial bills in the House of Representatives, is currently standing trial at the Central Jakarta District Court.
The hearings began on Dec. 12, when prosecutors charged Luthfi under Article 170(1) of the Criminal Code (KUHP) for violence against persons or properties, Article 212 in relation to Article 214 for violence against police officers and Article 218 for remaining in a crowd that has been told by the police to disperse. He could face a maximum of seven years in prison.
After his second hearing on Wednesday, the official website of the Central Jakarta District Court was reportedly hacked to show a photo of him that went viral, a link to an article about his charges and a sentence reading "Tertangkap berorasi dihukum penjara, korupsi berjuta masih berkuasa [arrested for speaking out, sent to prison, millions of corrupt officials still in power].”
The website was not accessible on Friday.
The photo shows Lutfi wearing blue-grey pants – associated with the uniforms of senior vocational high schools (STMs) – a grey hoodie and covering his face with the red and white Indonesian national flag in a cloud of teargas. It was taken at the Sept. 25 protest and went viral on social media.
Lutfi, one of the 1,489 people arrested during the series of student protests, is the first one to stand trial. More than 1,000 of those arrested have been released, while 380 others are facing charges including spreading false information, hurling rocks at the police, possessing sharp weapons, vandalizing police stations and possessing Molotov cocktails.
