Jakarta Aman is a joint initiative between PT Jakarta Lebih Aman and the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency to provide better protection to all citizens, not just women. Users can report emergencies including crimes, violence, natural disasters, fires, accidents and medical situations that occur in Jakarta.
ome time in April, a woman in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta was injured in a domestic row with her husband. Fortunately for her, a relative quickly used an app to raise an emergency alarm, notifying the Jakarta Integrated Women and Children’s Service Center (P2TP2A).
Within an hour, the woman received medical and legal assistance from P2TP2A officials.
Since its March launch, the Jakarta Aman (Safe Jakarta) app has been downloaded by over 10,000 users on Google Play Store and has received 108 reports of sexual violence, another testimony to the extent of problems faced by women, not just in this city of 10.5 million people, but also across the country.
The House of Representatives has been widely criticized for dragging its feet in coming up with a law on the elimination of sexual violence. The bill has been drafted and deliberated by the House for the last two years but the conservative parties have delayed its endorsement.

The main feature is the “panic button” linked to the 112 Jakarta emergency call service. Users who need immediate help can hold the button for three seconds and the dispatcher will call them back. At the same time, a high alert signal is sent to other users within 5 km, so that nearby users can come to the help-seeker’s aid.
Users can also send reports of incidents and complaints about public services by inserting pictures and a description. The app also provides the phone numbers of several institutions such as the police, ambulance, fire departments, hospitals, animal hospitals, repair shops and women and children protection services.
