The Indonesian federations for wrestling, table tennis and indoor field hockey each had their own reasons for failing to compete at the recent 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines.

he Indonesian sports community expects the Youth and Sports Ministry to “jump in” to resolve problems in three sports federations, which failed to send their athletes to the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines.

The Indonesian federations for wrestling, table tennis and indoor field hockey each had their own reasons for failing to compete at the Games.

The Indonesian Wrestling Association (PGSI), for example, decided to deploy no athletes as it claimed they were underqualified, which sparked protests from the federation’s regional members.

No Indonesian table tennis players were sent to the Games as a result of an ongoing dispute between three entities, each claiming to be the official federation.

The country’s indoor hockey team had their hopes of competing at the Games dashed. The team had reached Manila to compete in the biennial event only to find that they were disqualified as they were sent by a federation that was not recognized by the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

Djoko Pekik Irianto, the head of the Indonesian Sports Professors Association (Apkori), expected the government to “jump in” to the matter and discuss with the stakeholders in order to find a solution. The Indonesian Sports Council (KONI) could act as the host of the discussion with the related federations, he added.
