In his campaign during the Jakarta gubernatorial election in 2017, Anies Baswedan promised to stop the controversial reclamation projects in North Jakarta's coastal area. Anies then voided the permits for the development of 13 artificial islets in September 2018 that eventually triggered developers to file lawsuits against him. The legal process has not ended or produced a binding verdict since Anies has appealed to higher courts to overturn adverse rulings. Anies repeatedly said he would use any means to stop the reclamation projects. The fact is the Jakarta administration had lost three out of four cases in the lower courts.
