resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo signed a presidential regulation on COVID-19 mitigation and national economic recovery on Monday, bringing the two disparate divisions under a single umbrella.
The move is expected to streamline bureaucratic procedures related to the mitigation of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic downturn resulting from the health crisis.
In accordance with the regulation, State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Erick Thohir is set to oversee the national economic and COVID-19 recovery team.
Despite the unprecedented merging of departments, however, each individual task force will remain largely independent of each other, with Doni Monardo still in charge of the national COVID-19 task force and Deputy SOEs Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin leading the economic recovery task force.
“We understand that COVID-19 pandemic recovery will take time. Which is why the President has given the mandate [...] so that COVID-19 mitigation and economic recovery can be handled simultaneously, in the sense that both be managed under the auspices of a single institution for maximum coordination,” Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartanto told the press.
The national economic and COVID-19 recovery team consists of Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian and Health Minister Terawan Agus Putranto
Erick said he expected the newly formed team to come up with COVID-19 recovery plans within the week.
“We are going to propose several programs to the coordinating economic minister within the week. We’ll probably propose the programs to the President by next week,” he said.
