President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo took to Twitter on Sunday to congratulate United States president-elect Joe Biden on his “historic election”.
resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has joined other world leaders in congratulating Joe Biden for his United States presidential election victory, as many world leaders expect a less volatile America following the defeat of incumbent Donald Trump.
Jokowi took to Twitter on Sunday to congratulate Biden and vice president-elect Kamala Harris on their “historic election”, saying, “The huge turnout is a reflection of the hope placed in democracy."
Many US TV networks projected the victory of Biden and Kamala Harris on Saturday after the ticket claimed several key battleground states and secured the threshold of 270 Electoral College votes.
A preliminary estimate found that the divisive election brought out 67 percent of eligible voters – more than 160 million people – the highest in the US since 1900, according to the US Elections Project.
Similarly, Indonesia broke a voter turnout record in its own general election last year with 81.9 percent of the eligible population going to the polls, about 158 million voters.
“[I] look forward to [working] closely with you in strengthening the Indonesia-US strategic partnership and pushing forward our cooperation on the economy, democracy and multilateralism for the benefit of our two [nations] and beyond,” Jokowi said.
