ndonesia has reaffirmed its commitment to align its post-COVID-19 social and economic recovery plan with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ahead of its upcoming membership of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), a Foreign Ministry official has said.
The ministry’s director general for multilateral cooperation Febrian Alphyanto Ruddyard said Indonesia was committed to incorporating its recovery plan under the SDGs framework “not only as a direct response to the fallout of the pandemic but also to remain steadfast in our track to achieving the 2030 agenda.”
“For Indonesia, this commitment means placing an emphasis on emergency health services, social protection, facilitating support for micro, small and medium enterprises and preventing students from leaving school early,” Febrian said during the Jakpost Up Close webinar “Supporting Indonesia’s social and economic recovery through ECOSOC” on Thursday.
He also emphasized that the global recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic should be addressed evenly under the SDGs and that it required an “inclusive multi-stakeholder process”.
Foreign Ministry director for development, economy and environment Agustaviano Sofjan said the Indonesian government would prioritize at least four key agendas during its upcoming ECOSOC membership, namely the creative economy, digital taxation, innovative financing and improving first response humanitarian assistance in disaster management.
Agustaviano went on to add that the country’s participation in the ECOSOC next year was a platform to further promote the SDGs, while reiterating Indonesia’s commitment to taking a multi-stakeholder approach to achieving its own SDG target.
“Indonesia will utilize [its membership of] the ECOSOC as a platform to continue promoting SDGs as a development compass,” he said. “We will work together not only with government institutions but also other financial institutions and stakeholders. Certainly, by working with multi-stakeholders, this will increase our effort in trying to move forward in our implementation of SDGs.”
