em>Indonesia’s internet economy is expected to grow by 23 percent in the next five years. This growth increases the need for reliable data centers to support the digital sector.

A recent study by Digital Realty and Eco-Business has projected that Southeast Asia will be the fastest-growing region for data centers, with 89 percent of experts involved in the study expecting significant data usage growth in the region over the next five years.

However, academic journal Science wrote that data centers are energy-intensive enterprises, estimated to account for about 1 percent of worldwide electricity use and are expected to have significant implications for global energy demand. Several companies have started developing so-called renewable or green-focused data centers to address energy demand and environmental concerns.

The Jakarta Post’s Eisya A. Eloksari spoke virtually with data center provider Digital Realty’s Asia Pacific managing director, Mark Smith, about Indonesia’s market potential for such data centers and the company’s business plan in the country. The following is an excerpt of the interview.

Question: Can you share with us what Digital Realty does and how are you different from competitors in the market?

Answer: Digital Realty is the largest provider of data centers globally, based on square meters and the number of megawatts that we manage. We have 284 data centers around the globe, with portfolio companies including Facebook and IBM.

Globally, we are differentiated in many ways, one of which is we are the only provider that offers everything from targeting retail enterprise to colocation customers. We serve small enterprise deployments all the way up to colocation solutions for large international cloud service providers.
