T

he Constitutional Court is gearing up to settle more than a hundred regional election disputes filed with the court last month, with the court aiming to finish all judicial processes by late March.

The court received a total of 135 election disputes filed by losing candidates in the Dec. 9 polls by the end of the registration period on Dec. 30. The cases consist of seven relating to gubernatorial elections, 114 regarding regental elections and 14 concerning mayoral elections.

The court is currently setting up various measures to ensure it can conduct safe hearings starting late this month amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Besides conducting on-site hearings in the courtrooms, we will also conduct online hearings to minimize the risk of COVID-19 transmission. We are still strengthening our [online court] system and conducting trials on the technology," court spokesperson Fajar Laksono told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

He went on to say that the court was currently renovating two courtrooms for the in-person hearings to ensure attendees can maintain physical distance during the process.

“The offline hearings will be held under strict health protocols. All attendees are required to wear a mask and provide a negative rapid antigen test result,” he said, adding that the court would also limit trial participants.

According to Fajar, the court was also communicating with the National Police to set up security precautions during the hearings, although he did not specify the number of police officers that would be deployed.
