ndonesia has received the third batch of COVID-19 vaccines produced by Chinese firm Sinovac Biotech Ltd. on Tuesday, a day before health authorities officially start the vaccination drive by injecting the vaccine to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

An additional 15 million doses of Sinovac’s COVID-19 vaccine, CoronaVac, arrived at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, on Tuesday.

This was the third consignment of the Sinovac vaccine to arrive in Indonesia. The country had previously received 1.2 million doses of the vaccine on Dec. 6 and 1.8 million more on Dec. 31.

National COVID-19 task force chief Doni Monardo, who witnessed the arrival of the third batch, urged the public to keep adhering to the strict health protocol even though the government would start the vaccination drive in the near future.

“The arrival of these vaccines shouldn’t catch us off-guard. These vaccines must still be paired with adherence to health protocols,” Doni said on Tuesday.

The task force has been recording a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases in the past few months. According to official data, there were around 123,000 active cases in the second week of January – more than twice the 54,000 cases seen in November last year.

Doni said the government had tried to increase the number of hospital beds to accommodate the high number of confirmed cases, but they would not be enough for all patients across the country.
