ungarian firm Roatex Ltd. Zrt. has won Indonesia’s Public Works and Housing Ministry’s tender to implement the multi-lane free-flow (MLFF) electronic payment system on Indonesian toll roads, the Hungarian Embassy in Jakarta announced on Friday.

The ministry officiated the winner on Wednesday. Hungary’s involvement in the project started almost four years ago, beginning with a preliminary study conducted by Hungary’s National Toll Payment Services (NTPS) Plc and financed by the Hungarian government, according to an embassy statement.

“This project is an important milestone and an excellent example of the strengthening bilateral ties between Hungary and Indonesia,” the statement reads.

The embassy also expects the cooperation to result in reduced traffic on Indonesian roads with the establishment of the MLFF e-toll system.

Talks on installing toll road technology in Indonesia have been ongoing since 2017 when Indonesia embarked on extensive infrastructure development projects that aim to improve the country’s connectivity through toll roads and other ways.

The project was also discussed during the visit of Hungary’s Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Péter Szijjártó in January last year. The e-toll technology the country is offering is said to use a global navigation satellite system (GNSS), a technology that is estimated to cost US$90 million, according to Szijjártó.
