Government to track public mobility during latest COVID-19 restrictions

Indonesian government is working with digital platforms and telecommunication service providers to track public mobility during the emergency public activity restrictions from July 3 to 20.

he government is intensifying the monitoring of people’s movements during the emergency public activity restrictions (PPKM Darurat) period as a measure to curb the transmission of COVID-19 in the country’s most populous islands of Java and Bali.

Office of the Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister spokesperson Jodi Mahardi said the unprecedented times called for the unprecedented measures of monitoring people’s mobility down to district administration level.

Under the latest restrictions, people are advised to stay home as authorities have prohibited nonessential workers from working from the office, as well as closing off shopping centers and other public facilities.

The central government, Jodi added, had cooperated with several digital and social media platforms, as well as telecommunication providers to track people’s movements during the PPKM Darurat period.

“If we see high public mobility during the restrictions, the system [from digital platforms and service providers] will notify regional administrations and law enforcement institutions, which will conduct mitigation and intervention measures,” the spokesperson said during a press briefing on Saturday.

However, Jodi did not mention the names of the digital platforms or service providers cooperating with the government in the tracking measures.
