The PPKM Darurat has been expanded to cover 15 regions outside Java and Bali from July 12 to 20 as the "second wave" of COVID-19 infections spreads to other islands in the archipelago, driven primarily by the more transmissible Delta variant.
he government is expanding the emergency public activity restrictions (PPKM Darurat) to 15 cities and regencies outside of Java and Bali as the country battles the “second wave” of coronavirus infections, driven primarily by the more transmissible Delta variant.
The new restrictions were imposed after the stricter micro-scale public activity restrictions (PPKM Mikro) had failed to halt COVID-19 transmission in certain regions outside Java and Bali, and more regencies and cities came under the government’s designation of high-risk community transmission.
The cities implementing the new restrictions are: Medan in North Sumatra, Padan; Bukittinggi and Padang Panjang in West Sumatra; Batam and Tanjung Pinang in the Riau Islands; Bandar Lampung in Lampung; Pontianak and Singkawang in West Kalimantan; Balikpapan, Bontang and Berau in East Kalimantan; Mataram in West Nusa Tenggara; and Manokwari and Sorong in West Papua.
The emergency restrictions will be in force in these cities and regencies from July 12 to 20.
“The mobility restrictions will follow the PPKM Darurat currently implemented in Java and Bali,” Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto, who also heads the COVID-19 Handling and National Economic Recovery Committee (KPCPEN), told a press conference on Friday.

The emergency restrictions include a requirement that all nonessential workers and students work and study from home, while essential businesses are allowed to operate at 50 percent of their maximum workplace capacity. The new policy also tightens restrictions on community mobility and air travel, and bans dine-in services at restaurants.
