Around 41.3 million people have received their first dose as of Saturday, while 16.2 million people have been fully vaccinated.
he government is pulling out all the stops to accelerate the national COVID-19 vaccination drive and fulfill the target set by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo of administering up to 2 million doses a day by August.
Jokowi announced the target in late June, urging health authorities to speed up vaccinations so the country can reach herd immunity as soon as possible amid the latest COVID-19 wave.
Indonesia is currently battling a coronavirus surge that has crippled the country’s healthcare system, which is buckling under the high number of daily COVID-19 infections and deaths. On Monday, health authorities confirmed 34,257 new cases, bringing the cumulative national tally to 2.91 million cases.
As of Monday, there are 542,938 active cases across the nation.
The government has also extended its vaccination target from 181 million people to around 208 million by including children aged 12 to 17.
The Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) has approved the use of CoronaVac, a vaccine produced by Chinese firm Sinovac Biotech Ltd., for the age group. It has also approved the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, Comirnaty, to be given to recipients aged 12 years and above.
