ozens of people evacuated by the Indonesian government from Afghanistan arrived safely at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in East Jakarta on early Saturday.
“Alhamdulillah [thank God], we have succeeded in evacuating Indonesians from Afghanistan,” Retno said in a livestreamed press conference on Saturday, adding that all evacuees and the evacuation team members would self-isolate in accordance with health protocols.
The evacuees arrived after the evacuation team, comprising officials from the Foreign Ministry, the Indonesian Military and the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), were given permission to land at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Friday.
The Indonesian Air Force aircraft used by the evacuation team was initially planned to spend only 30 minutes at the airport but eventually had to wait for two hours due to the "dynamics on the ground," Retno said.
One of the evacuees, an Indonesian diplomat, was ill and was immediately treated after the group landed. Retno confirmed that the diplomat did not contract COVID-19.
As many as 26 Indonesians, five Filipinos and two Afghans boarded the Indonesian government's evacuation flight on Friday. The move was part of the latest round of evacuation initiated by foreign diplomatic missions based in Afghanistan’s capital city after the Taliban seized control of most of the country.
