Volunteer groups have started to declare their support for several potential contenders of the 2024 presidential elections who have fared well in recent public opinion polls.
hile Indonesia won’t be heading to the polling booths to vote in the country's general elections for another three years, early support from volunteer groups is beginning to emerge for potential candidates of the 2024 presidential race, even though the political fate of the prospects is far from sealed.
Most recently, a group calling itself the National Alliance for a Prosperous Indonesia (ANIES) declared support for Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan to run for president in the 2024 elections.
Group coordinator La Ode Basir, who was a volunteer for Anies when he first ran in Jakarta, cited the governor’s success as the reason for supporting him as a potential candidate. The group also considered the Jakarta Smart Card and the Jakarta Health Card programs as evidence that Anies governed “for the people”.
“It is our obligation to support Anies to become the leader of Indonesia so that the advantages Jakartans enjoy today may be [extended] to all citizens,” La Ode said at the Joang Building in Central Jakarta on Wednesday as quoted by Tempo.co.
Anies himself did not attend the event. When asked about his supporters, he replied that the 2024 elections were still years away.
