PT Medco Power Indonesia has said it will develop a pilot project for the export of solar power to Singapore.

Located on Bulan Island in the Riau Islands province and in close proximity to Singapore, the Bulan Island Solar PV Project is expected to have 670 megawatts of installed capacity in the initial phase, which is projected to provide 100 MW equivalent of nonintermittent electricity to Singapore.

The power producer, a subsidiary of Indonesian oil company PT Medco Energi Internasional, will develop the project in a consortium with electricity retailer PacificLight Power Pte Ltd (PLP) and Salim Group electricity company Gallant Venture Ltd.

The consortium signed a joint development agreement on the project at the Singapore International Energy Week on Monday, witnessed by Indonesia's Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Arifin Tasrif and Singapore's Trade and Industry Second Minister Tan See Leng.

Previously, the consortium of the three companies had secured an import license from Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA).

Once completed, the project will increase renewable energy investment, create job opportunities in related industries and encourage technology transfer to the Riau Islands, according to Medco Power president director Eka Satria.

“We are delighted to be working with PLP and Salim Group on the Bulan Island Solar PV Project's development,” Eka said in a press release on Monday.
