Reinforcing soft skills such as critical thinking, analytical thinking, leadership and others remains crucial. This is essential to enable us to adopt and benefit from the development of AI.
hroughout history, technology has been a primary force driving revolutionary changes. Technological discoveries, such as the steam engine that marked the first industrial revolution (Industry 1.0), brought significant changes to production processes by replacing human and animal labor with mechanical power.
New technologies have been continually developed since then, leading to significant industrial revolutions to culminate in Industry 4.0 in the present day.
Although Industry 4.0 is still in its nascent stage, the world is already anticipating Industry 5.0, which will focus on more efficient, flexible and sustainable production processes through the integration of advanced and emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), the internet of things (IoT), robotics and hyper automation, augmented and virtual reality, cloud computing and 5G. These emerging technologies continue to develop at a very rapid pace, shifting the role of workers and professionals while creating new jobs and disappearing outdated ones.
Ever since the world entered in 2011 the era of Industry 4.0 marked by intelligent systems and automation, AI has become familiar among those emerging technologies, including in Indonesia. Known locally as kecerdasan buatan, the term refers to a computer program that mimics human intelligence, such as decision-making, reasoning and other characteristically human skills.
A study conducted by Microsoft and IDC Asia Pacific in 2019 revealed that 14 percent of Indonesian companies had adopted AI. This dynamic is happening not only in the private sector, and most of the public sector has also begun adopting AI. For instance, the Jakarta Smart City (JSC) operated by the Jakarta provincial administration uses AI technology to provide smart governance, enhancing its speed and quality in delivering various public services.
Changing competencies
The push for AI technology is expected to grow stronger. The significant benefits offered by this technology will accelerate the expansion of AI across various sectors, not only in the manufacturing and retail sectors but also in service sectors like transportation, hospitality, health and more.
