Jokowi inaugurates 12 more ambassadors, military chiefs

P

resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo swore in 12 more ambassadors on Wednesday, rounding off a string of inaugurations that include the new Indonesian Military (TNI) commander, the Army chief of staff and the head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

Among the latest batch of envoys, four stand out as noncareer appointees: politicians Rudy Alfonso and Zuhairi Misrawi, pulp and paper tycoon Gandi Sulistiyanto, and former forestry minister M. Prakosa.

Others sworn in include senior diplomat Damos Dumoli Agusman, who is set to take up the post of Indonesian ambassador to Austria and Slovenia, which is also accredited to the UN Office in Vienna. Damos was previously director-general for legal affairs and international treaties at the Foreign Ministry.

Ina Krisnamurthi, who previously worked as the foreign minister’s special advisor on economic diplomacy, was confirmed as ambassador to India and Bhutan.

Daniel Tumpal Simanjuntak was made envoy to Canada and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Anita Luhulima for Poland, Suwartini Wirta for Croatia, Heru Subolo for Bangladesh, Triyogo Jatmiko for Tanzania and Ghafur Akbar Dharmaputra for Ukraine and Armenia.

Meanwhile, Gandi, who was previously managing director of diversified conglomerate Sinar Mas, was made ambassador to South Korea.

Rudy, who was the Golkar Party’s head of legal affairs, was sworn in as Indonesian ambassador to Portugal. He was once called as a witness in a bribery case involving former lawmaker Markus Nari in 2019, Tempo.co reported.

Another politician, Zuhairi Misrawi, was appointed as ambassador to Tunisia. He is a member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and also helped Jokowi’s election campaigns in 2014 and 2019. Prior to his inauguration, Zuhairi was appointed as an independent commissioner of PT Yodya Karya, a state-owned company in engineering and management consulting services.

The inaugurations were formalized in Presidential Decree No.139/P/2021, issued on Nov. 16.

Wednesday’s ceremony was the second batch of new ambassadors sworn in this year, after President Jokowi inaugurated 17 envoys on Oct. 25, including former presidential spokesperson Fadjroel Rachman and former Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) chairman Rosan Roeslani.

A total of 29 envoys have been approved by the House from the 33 candidates proposed by Jokowi in early June.

Former health minister Terawan Agus Putranto, who was widely criticized as the man most responsible for Indonesia’s poor early response to the COVID-19 crisis, had previously been tipped to become an ambassador but reportedly withdrew.

In addition to the envoys, Jokowi also inaugurated Gen. Andika Perkasa as the new TNI commander and Lt. Gen. Dudung Abdurrachman to replace him as Army chief of staff, as well as Maj. Gen. Suharyanto as BNPB head.

Vice President Ma'ruf Amin, Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Mahfud MD, House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani and PDI-P chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri attended the inauguration ceremony.
