The six ASEAN leaders attending Saturday's meeting asked for a commitment from military coup leader Min Aung Hlaing to stop violence, release political prisoners and open access to humanitarian aid.
he leaders of ASEAN member states reached a consensus on the crisis in post-coup Myanmar at a meeting on Saturday, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has said.
During the meeting, which took place at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, the leaders asked for a commitment from coup leader Min Aung Hlaing to stop violence, release political prisoners and open access to humanitarian aid.
Speaking after the meeting, Jokowi said the situation in Myanmar was unacceptable and must not continue.
“Violence must be stopped. Democracy, stability and peace in Myanmar must return immediately. The interests of Myanmar’s people must always be a priority,” he said in a statement.
He added that it was important for Min Aung and Myanmar’s military leadership to commit to several things, including stopping the military violence.
“All parties must exercise restraint,” he said.
