ndonesian soccer league operator PT Liga Indonesia Baru (LIB) is looking into allegations that three players from PSM Makassar were subject to online racist abuse after a recent match against Persija.

LIB CEO Ferry Paulus said everyone found to be involved in the online racist attacks against the three PSM Makassar players – Cape Verdean Yuran Fernandes, Papua native Lance Sayuri and South Sulawesi-born Erwin Gutawa – would be sanctioned.

"PSSI chairman [Erick Thohir] has given the directive and we have conducted an internal probe to prevent this kind of incident. This online attack is severe, there is a law against this," Ferry said, as quoted by Tempo, referring to the Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) Law.

Thee three PSM players became the target of racial slurs on social media after their team tied 1-1 with Persija on July 3.

Some posts accused the three players of running out the clock to secure a draw against their opponents.

The Indonesian Association of Professional Soccer Players (APPI) has called on the Soccer Association of Indonesia (PSSI) to suspend Liga 1 following the racist abuse.

PSSI chairman Erick Thohir declined to respond to the call to suspend Liga 1, but he pledged to crack down on racist abuse.
