T

he Soccer Association of Indonesia (PSSI) on Saturday named former Canada coach John Herdman as the boss of the men's national soccer team following the departure of former Barcelona and Dutch player Patrick Kluivert.

The appointment of 50-year-old Englishman Herdman was "the beginning of a new era", the association said.

"Herdman is not just a coach, but an experienced architect who has led teams to the World Cup," the PSSI said in a statement. "Herdman's diverse track record is the main reason for this appointment."

His first games in charge will be in March when Indonesia host the FIFA Series in Jakarta.

Herdman guided Canada's men to the 2022 World Cup, their first appearance in 36 years.

He took Canada's women to the quarter-finals of the 2015 Women’s World Cup hosted by the country. He also led the team to bronze medal at the Olympic Games in 2012 and 2016.

Before Canada, Herdman worked with New Zealand's women's team.

Kluivert left the Indonesia job by mutual consent after failing to get them to this year's World Cup.
