The trial of former communications and information minister Johnny G. Plate of the NasDem Party began on Tuesday, with prosecutors accusing him of pocketing some Rp 17.8 billion (US$1.18 million) in kickbacks from inflated procurement in a government 4G telephony project.
The interim communications minister will seek ways to fund the remaining construction work for the government’s graft-mired 4G telephony project, claiming that it was overfunded to begin with, as authorities seek to recover the stolen public funds through the courts.
The government has said it will carry on with a multi-trillion-rupiah telephony project for underdeveloped regions, despite the arrest of the minister in charge of the scheme on related graft charges and the loss of some Rp 8.1 trillion (US$545 million) of state funds.
The Attorney General’s Office (AGO) is digging deeper into alleged corruption in the construction of base transceiver stations (BTS) after investigators questioned Communications and Information Minister Johnny G. Plate for a second time.
