President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo expressed hope for the future of Indonesia-China ties as analysts envision continuity in the two countries’ economic partnership following Xi Jinping’s reelection as the political and military leader of China.
China’s mission in Jakarta has given reassurances that its workers who come to Indonesia alongside big Chinese investment won’t take away jobs from the local populace and instead open up more employment opportunities for them.
Local governments have shown a lack of trust in Chinese workers employed in numerous projects throughout the country, potentially signaling a flashpoint in Indonesia-China relations and dampening milestone diplomatic celebrations this year.
Xi also conveyed his appreciation for the trust and understanding extended by his Indonesian colleagues, saying that his recent conversation with Jokowi was a reflection of the robust bilateral relationship between China and Indonesia as comprehensive strategic partners.
