View all search resultsThe floating garbage and trash on the bottom of the Citarum River in West Java, often dubbed as the most polluted river in the world, as well as other bodies of water across Indonesia, comes from the mishandling and mismanagement of waste, experts have highlighted.
The West Java administration has launched a massive cleanup operation to clear the Citarum of a floating pile of trash stretching at least 3 kilometers, with the acting governor vowing to deploy heavy equipment to speed up the process.
Judges ordered PT Kamarga Kurnia Textile Industry to pay compensation of Rp 4.25 billion (US$301,000) for polluting the river. The amount, however, was less than the Rp 18.2 billion demanded by the Environment and Forestry Ministry.
