View all search resultsIndonesia’s warming relations with Australia faced new challenges this week as the COVID-19 outbreak forced Jakarta to further restrict entry and Canberra to close down its borders, putting many lucrative partnership projects on hold while the two governments scramble to ensure the safety of their citizens.
The crocodile, regularly spotted swimming in the Palu River, had been trapped in a used motorcycle tire for years and has foiled successive attempts to free it, including a recent rescue contest held by the Central Sulawesi Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA).
In a speech to Australian lawmakers delivered in Indonesian, Jokowi said that both sides should put more focus on collaborating in the Indo-Pacific region, especially after they had finalized the hotly anticipated Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.
Regular surveys conducted by the highly respected Lowy Institute show that Australians – including businesspeople – feel limited warmth toward Indonesians, and rate them only slightly higher than Russians and Egyptians in terms of how we perceive them.
Jokowi said he wanted to understand what it took to develop a capital city such as Canberra as his government went ahead with a plan to relocate the nation’s capital from Jakarta to East Kalimantan.
