View all search resultsPresident Prabowo Subianto’s administration will open the gates of the Merdeka Palace in Central Jakarta to thousands of citizens on Sunday, Aug. 17, in what is being billed as the largest Independence Day celebration ever held on the palace grounds, marking the country’s 80th anniversary.
The Jakarta administration has said it will significantly cut public transportation fares and divert traffic along several routes on Tuesday and Wednesday to reduce congestion during New Year celebrations in the city of more than 11 million people.
The city administration is marking Jakarta's 497th birthday with a special flat rate of Rp 1 for the BRT, MRT and LRT on June 22 and 23, while a separate discounted rate of 20 percent off applies to limited Whoosh services.
Thousands of Indonesians and a number of religious organizations gathered on Sunday at the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta to hold an interfaith demonstration in support of Palestinians and to make a plea for a cease to the siege in Gaza.
