View all search resultsIndonesia is facing calls to speak up to China following a United Nations human rights report of “serious human rights violations” against the Uyghurs and other Muslim communities in China’s Xinjiang province.
The department on the same day released an annual report on international religious freedom which highlighted the US government's concerns over Beijing's repression of Uyghurs and members of other Muslim groups in Xinjiang through mass arbitrary detention, forced labor, forced sterilization and other abuses.
Parliament unanimously passed a motion expressing "grave concern" at human rights abuses in Xinjiang province, but only after Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's ruling Labour Party insisted any reference to genocide was scrubbed out.
