The family had indeed received substantial support from donors and had spent the money, he admitted on Saturday, after the initial story went viral.
A 45-year old woman in Central Java says several people have promised to help her afford cancer treatment, but the family have only received a small fraction of the money prominently pledged on signs they were asked to hold up for the cameras.
“If we insist on keeping drugs that are not cost effective and keep giving them to our patients, the consequences are billions of rupiahs that could be used for patients’ other needs and drugs."
Following its decision to remove the breast cancer drug trastuzumab from the National Formulary, the Healthcare and Social Security Agency (BPJS Kesehatan) has suggested that doctors prescribe a different drug for patients.
