The report said the world permanently lost 8.1 million hectares of forest, an area about the size of England, in 2024 alone, putting the planet 63% behind the goal set by over 140 countries in the 2021 Glasgow Leaders' Declaration on Forests and Land Use.
In April, the government announced its intention to evict around 40,000 people residing in seven villages inside the national park, accusing them of building illegal settlements and cultivating palm oil plantations in protected forest areas.
As the custodians of two of the world's top three tropical forests by area, Brazil and Indonesia have an opportunity, and arguably a responsibility, to take the global lead in climate policies by starting where it matters the most: at home.
