Record numbers of cases were confirmed in Miyagi, Yamagata, Tottori, Okayama and Tokushima prefectures, with 254 additional deaths nationally.
Almost all Indonesians have developed antibodies against COVID-19, according to the latest serosurvey conducted by the Health Ministry and the School of Public Health at the University of Indonesia in July.
The research, published by Nature Communications, said viral transmission from bats to humans may have been "substantially underestimated", adding that its mapping of bat species in the region could aid efforts to determine the origins of COVID-19.
