Myanmar's ruling generals remain barred from key meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) over their failure to implement a peace plan agreed with the bloc two months after a 2021 coup that unleashed chaos in the country.
A resident of Rathedaung said gunfire was heard before dawn on Monday followed by hours of artillery bombardment, with the military seen blocking entrances to the area and reinforcing administrative buildings.
The shelling took place close to midnight on Monday in Kachin State, the sources said, when artillery hit the camp about 5 km from a base in the border town of Laiza run by the Kachin Independence Army (KIA).
While expectations continue to mount on Indonesia as this year’s ASEAN chairman to make breakthroughs in Myanmar, analysts have noted that developments in Thailand, which is set to face an election scheduled for mid-May, will likely affect Myanmar’s future.
