View all search resultsThe Bangkok Declaration on Combating Marine Debris in ASEAN Region was adopted by leaders of the ASEAN last month, welcoming the ASEAN Framework of Action on Marine Debris. This follows previous commitments made by the leaders on promoting sustainable consumption and production to reduce marine plastic debris.
Marine plastic pollution has been acknowledged in recent years as one of the major global environmental issues and challenges. Since the beginning of 2019, movements to combat marine plastic pollution have accelerated around the world.
Indonesia has a major marine debris problem on its hands. It has held a reputation as being the second-biggest marine polluter in the world, responsible for around 200,000 tons of plastic waste per year, as reported in a 2015 study by Jenna Jambeck.
Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the country’s largest Muslim organization, will hold its consultation meeting and grand conference with the theme “Strengthening Ukhuwah Wathaniyah [national brotherhood] for the People’s Sovereignty” from Feb. 27 to March 1 in Miftahul Huda Al-Azhar Islamic boarding school in the West Java town of Banjar.
