Quick counts conducted by a number of survey institutes just after the voting on Feb. 14 found presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto and his running mate Gibran Rakabuming Raka garnered the majority of the votes to avoid a runoff. The superiority of the former army general in the quick counts went hand in hand with his persistent dominance in the opinion surveys in the run-up to the elections, despite several controversies, particularly surrounding Gibran’s candidacy.
One day after Prabowo claimed victory in Wednesday’s presidential election, PDI-P secretary-general Hasto Kristiyanto hinted at the readiness of the party to go into opposition after being the largest party in the ruling coalition for the past 10 years.
Prabowo reinvented himself and strengthened his political base in the election, but It was his alliance with former rival Jokowi that played a key role in his ability to clinch the presidency, analysts say.
