View all search resultsThe Jakarta Police released face sketches of two men allegedly involved in the murder of a local bystander during the unrest after a protest in Jakarta on Aug. 27, while also declined to tie the rioters to a specific group yet.
The new police reform efforts underway since the August-September protests must clearly delineate the steps toward rebuilding a civilian policing institution, in particular redefining the role and functions of the National Police’s paramilitary Brimob unit.
Nearly 1,000 people, including 200 children, were named as suspects by the National Police and its regional offices for alleged incitement and involvement in violent riots during the string of anti-government protests across the country from late August to early September.
State independent rights bodies, including National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) and National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan), form a fact-finding team to review casualties and damages from recent nationwide riots and look into who masterminded them.
Three people were killed in the fire at the Makassar City Council building. Two of the victims were council staff members, while the third was a civil servant. All three were reportedly trapped inside a room as the building was engulfed in flames.
