View all search resultsThe export of sea sand may threaten islands across the archipelago, as well as the livelihoods of people living on them, as sand dredging has caused dozens of islands to disappear in the past, environmentalists have warned.
The government lifted a ban this month on the export of dredged sand that was in place for more than 20 years, in a move it claims will bring in badly needed revenue but that activists say will further degrade the country’s vital marine ecosystems.
The trucks transport construction materials to neighboring areas, predominantly to Tangerang in Banten and Jakarta, to supply government infrastructure projects and commercial housing developments.
