An Indonesian Air Force CASA CN A-2909 plane was shot at by a faction of the National Liberation Army of West Papua (TPNPB) while flying over Serambakon district in Pegunungan Bintang regency, Papua, at 4,800 feet on Monday.
A joint military/police task force and a Papuan news website are issuing conflicting reports over the numbers and ages of civilians killed and injured in a gunfight on Tuesday. The task force claims to have killed one 18-year-old male, but the website is reporting that two males, a 12-year-old and a 51-year-old, were shot dead.
The military court found them guilty of selling thousands of rounds of ammunition to an armed rebel group — widely referred to as an “armed criminal group” by authorities — in the region.
Many will no doubt blame the United States or Australia if a Papua exit comes to pass. But seeing the racial abuse against Papuan students and the heightened reactions in Papua, we Indonesians, not just the government, should blame ourselves. We have treated the Papuans the same way we did the people of East Timor.
In a press conference at the Amnesty International Indonesia office in Jakarta, the team reported that at least 69 men, 21 women, and 92 children had died between December 2018 and July this year.
