eople travel for many reasons; to escape the realities of life, discover your true self, make new friends and many other reasons we use to justify booking a plane ticket to London or Lombok.

In commemoration of International Women’s Day on Tuesday, travel website TripAdvisor conducted a survey on 2,800 female travelers across Asia including Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, China, India and Japan on the topic of vacations.

The findings suggest that travel helped 68 percent of respondents learn about the world. Meanwhile, one in three (33 percent) Asian females said that travel changed the way they think and the way they live their lives. In Indonesia, 36 percent of women believe travel gave them more confidence.

Women are also in charge when it comes to the decision-making process -- half of Asian women attest to this -- and also contribute to the cost of their vacations.

“It’s encouraging to see Asian female travelers breaking stereotypes and not just leading the travel planning and booking process, but also having the purchasing power,” said TripAdvisor communication director Janice Lee Fang in a press release on Tuesday.

So, what do these women look for in their vacation time? Number one on the list is apparently nature, followed by good food and restaurants, arts, history and cultural attractions. On a surprising note, shopping has the smallest percentage in the survey (30 percent).

As for the most-reviewed destinations by female travelers on the web, Japan led the pack, followed by Thailand and Australia in the second and third spots, respectively; while the US was named the top pick for long-haul travel. (kes)
