hocolates, watches and cheese might come to mind when you think of Switzerland. However, this country has so much more to offer, including lakes.
The lakes in Switzerland have been a tourist destination for several years. The country has more than 100 lakes, varying in location, height and beauty.
Here are some of the must visit lakes if you happen to travel to Switzerland:
Lake Geneva
Lake Geneva (or Lac Leman) is the biggest lake in Switzerland. Lovely villages, extensive vineyards and mountains surround it. It is so big that Switzerland has to share the lake with its neighboring country, France. The famous fountain, Jet d’Eau in Geneva, and the historic castle, Chateau de Chillon, in Montreux, are both featured on Lake Geneva. Crossing the border from Switzerland to France can be done by boat from Lausanne.
Lake Thun & Lake Brienz
Lake Thun and Lake Brienz are like twins, separated by the town of Interlaken. Both are beautiful and have become local favorites during summer days when everyone brings their own paddles and rents a kayak to sail across the water. Lake Thun and Lake Brienz also offer cruise trips to view the villages and mountains around the lakes.

Lake Blausee
Lake Blausee is rather small compared to the other lakes. This lake is home to a legendary love story and is also one of the most successful organic trout farms in the country. It is one of the bluest lakes I’ve ever seen. You can see the depth of the lake and big trout swimming in it. Opt to have a picnic nearby while enjoying the calm color of this lake.
Lake Oeschinen
Located in the same region as Lake Blausee, this lake cannot be reached without a cable car. After you take the cable car up the mountain, you still need to walk for about 20 minutes to reach the lake. Just like any other lake (except Lake Blausee), visitors are allowed to kayak, paddle board and swim in the lake. One famous summer activity on Lake Oeschinen is tobogganing, which is like a mini rollercoaster ride down the mountain.

Lake Caumasee
Lake Caumasee is another small lake at high altitude. It is famous for a little island situated in the middle of the lake. Lake Caumasee is located in the midst of tall pine trees. It can be reach by a funicular or by foot. This lake freezes in winter and is perfect for swimming in the summer.
Lake Lugano
Lake Lugano is on the Italian border of Switzerland and is shared between the two countries. The weather is warmer on Lake Lugano. Lake Lugano gives an alluring view of the country. Imagine being in Switzerland with an Italian atmosphere, the best of two countries in one place.
