or this year’s Idul Fitri, the Tourism Ministry is encouraging homebound travelers and tourists alike to explore the vast array of tourist attractions in Indonesia with a program called Pesona Lebaran (The Wonder of Lebaran) 2017.

A guidebook is currently being prepared that will include historical and cultural sites, amusement parks and local culinary destinations across the country's major islands.

The ministry also created a hashtag #WisataJalurMudik (Exodus Route Tourism) to encourage travelers to upload their holiday photos onto social media.

“Every region must have 10 cool tourist sites; it would be a shame if you missed them,” said Tourism Minister Arief Yahya.

Arief then went on to give an example from Aceh, which is home to 10 major destinations, namely the Kilometer No. 1 RI Monument in Sabang, Iboih Beach in Sabang, Anoi Itam Beach in Sabang, the Tsunami Museum in Banda Aceh, Baiturrahman Grand Mosque in Banda Aceh, PLTD Apung in Banda Aceh, Lampuuk Beach in Aceh Besar, Laut Tawar Lake in Central Aceh, Pacu Kude in Gayo and the Samudera Pasai Kingdom housing complex in North Aceh.

According to the ministry, while in Surabaya in East Java, the places you should visit are the House of Sampoerna, the Sunan Ampel Arab Village and Suramadu Bridge and the activities you should try are a culinary tour and experiencing a Lebaran Ketupat (the seventh day after Idul Fitri) celebration.

Arief also said that during the fasting month, the number of foreign and domestic tourists decreases, but during Idul Fitri the number of domestic tourists can reach 20 million people.

“Jakarta is at low season during the fasting month and Lebaran; hotel occupancy can drop to 30 percent. This is the time to promote to non-Muslim majority countries, such as Singapore and Australia. Travel agents usually also offer discounts for airline tickets, accommodations and attractions,” Arief said.
