mid increasing volcanic activity at Mount Agung in Bali's Karangasem regency, the Island of the Gods still landed at the number two spot of Smart Travel Asia magazines’ Top 10 Holiday Destinations in Asia.

The ranking is part of the magazine's 14th year of annual Best in Travel Poll for global frequent travelers without nomination fees or voter inducements, it explained in a statement.

"This market research offers a genuine litmus test of travel trends and brand preferences amongst a knowledgeable high-spend high-travel audience that makes an average 14 annual air trips within and to Asia," it adds.

Shanghai in China topped the list of Asia's best holiday destinations, followed by Bali tied with Taipei at number two. Hokkaido, Japan, tied with Dubai in the third spot, while Bangkok landed at number four and Hong Kong tied with Phuket, Thailand, in fifth place.

Denpasar was also included in the magazine’s Top 10 Cities for Meetings list at number six, tied with Beijing, China. Hong Kong was recognized as the most popular destination in the category, followed by Shanghai and Singapore at second place, Dubai at number three, Macau at number four, and Bangkok and Da Nang in Vietnam ranking fifth.

The research further recognized Bali properties in its hotel lists, with Mandapa, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Bali topping the list of Luxury Hotels; The Chedi Club Tanah Gajah, Ubud, Bali ranking third among Top 10 Boutique Hotels; Ayana Resort & Spa Bali topping the Top 25 Spa Hotels; Bulgari Resort Bali as third-best Wedding Hotels; and Grand Hyatt Bali as the best Family Hotel in Asia.

"The big winners were Bali, Thailand — despite Bangkok's drop, largely on account of airport woes and taxi cheats — Hong Kong, Shanghai, Dubai and Singapore with Vietnam picked as the fastest climbing destination with an attractive quality-to-price ratio," concluded the magazine. (kes)
