T

he annual Jember Fashion Carnival (JFC) returns in August with a rather unique addition to its list of activities: pets marching a 1.8-kilometer catwalk.

As reported by kompas.com, following the opening of the event by Jember Regent Faida on Aug. 7, various pets from cats, dogs and chickens to reptiles and civets could be found strutting the catwalk as part of the Pets Carnival at the 17th edition of JFC on Aug. 8.

JFC president Dynand Fariz said this unique carnival was held to educate the public to take more care of animals.

"Don't hurt animals since they also have the same rights to live," said Dynand, adding that Pets Carnival also sought to showcase the many rare fauna species belonging to Indonesia.

"As the assets of our country, these rare animals have to be preserved and taken care of. This is our responsibility together," he added.

Pets Carnival is said to be the first ever carnival in the world that features pets alongside their owners.

"This is the first event of its kind in the world; the catwalk is quite long -- up to 1.8 km," said Dynand.

One of the visitors, Aji, said he was happy for the opportunity to enjoy such a spectacle.

"This is a spectacular breakthrough. This is my first time seeing a carnival featuring pets and their owners. Long live JFC," he said. (saz/kes)
